ADHD task paralysis: why you cannot start

You know the task. Your body will not move. That is task paralysis, not laziness. Here is why it happens and what to try in the next two minutes.

It is not that you do not care

ADHD task paralysis is the gap between knowing and moving. You can explain the task. You can feel the deadline. Your hands still do not open the tab. Shame tells you this is a character flaw. It is a starting problem.

What the freeze actually is

Starting needs a few things at once: pick the task, remember the first step, tolerate the feeling of doing it badly. ADHD brains often cannot hold all three. So the body waits. Waiting looks like scrolling. Scrolling looks like not caring.

If you cannot even name the task, stop reading this and dump the noise first. A starter trick cannot help if you do not know what you are frozen on.

What to do in the next two minutes

Pick the first one that feels even 5% possible.

1. Open the thing. Do not finish it. Opening counts.

2. Write one ugly sentence. You cannot edit a blank page.

3. Set a three-minute timer and allow yourself to stop when it rings.

4. Stand up and change rooms. Freeze often lives in the chair.

5. Drink water, then click the task once.

6. Text someone: starting the email now.

Then you are allowed to stop. Starting is the skill. Finishing can wait.

What not to do

Do not rebuild your entire system. Do not watch another video about discipline. Do not add the task to a prettier list. That is more deciding, which is how you got stuck.

If you need a physical nudge

Some freeze moments want a card in your hand, not another paragraph. How to start a task with ADHD has the same first moves on one page. The card deck is sixty of them if you want a stack on the desk.
