How to start a task with ADHD

You know exactly what needs doing. Starting is the whole problem. This is not a motivation speech. It is a short list of first moves that get a frozen body in contact with the work.

It is a starting problem

Advice like just begin assumes the on-ramp exists. For a lot of ADHD brains the gap is between knowing and moving. Shame makes that gap wider. Treat starting as the skill. Finishing can wait.

If you cannot name the task yet

Stop here. Dump the noise first. A starter card cannot help if you do not know which task you are frozen on. Use the free one-page dump, then come back.

Six first moves you can use tonight

Pick the first one that feels even 5% possible. Do that. Then you are allowed to stop.

  1. 1. Open the thing

Open the email, doc, or tab. Do not reply yet. Opening counts as starting.

  2. 2. Write one ugly sentence

For writing tasks, type a bad first line. You can fix it later. You cannot edit a blank page.

  3. 3. Put your body somewhere else

Stand up, change rooms, or sit on the floor. Freeze often lives in the chair you have been in for two hours.

  4. 4. Set a three-minute timer

Tell yourself you can stop when it rings. Most of the time the hard part was the first 90 seconds.

  5. 5. Drink water, then touch the task

A body cue first, then the smallest contact with the work. Not a morning routine. One sip, one click.

  6. 6. Text someone you are starting

One line: starting the school email now. Social scaffolding is a tool, not a personality transplant.

When one trick is not enough

Different freeze moments need different nudges. Body, environment, social, tiny writing starts. That is what the Task Initiation Card Deck is for. Sixty cards. Draw one. Do the tiny step. Stop.
